The Blue Communities Project (BCP), originally initiated by the Council of Canadians, Blue Planet Project and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in Canada in 2009, has gained recognition as a movement dedicated to defending the Human Right to Water, opposing privatization, and promoting the idea of water as a common good. Beginning in 2023, the Africa Water Justice Network (AWJN) began to adapt this concept in Africa, recognizing the importance of water in the continent’s socio-economic and environmental context.
