AWJN, FECCIWA and Church Aid are working together towards the launch of the Liberia Water Justice Network, with activities scheduled for 22–24 October 2026.
We are strengthening our organising in West Africa through a collaboration with the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in West Africa (FECCIWA) and Church Aid to establish a national platform for water justice in Liberia.
The programme will create space for collective discussion and action around a shared demand: water must be recognised and protected as a human right and a common good.
Turning shared demands into collective action
Through the Liberia Water Justice Network, we aim to connect community concerns with sustained public advocacy. Our priorities include recognition and implementation of the human right to water, greater public investment in water provision and distribution, and protection of water bodies from mining pollution and other environmental threats.
Establishing a national platform is an opportunity to build collective power around these demands. We want to strengthen the participation of communities in decisions about water and support organising that holds public authorities accountable for access, availability and affordability.
Bringing Blue Communities principles into local organising
The programme will also introduce Blue Communities Africa as a practical way for communities and institutions to advance water justice.
Through our collaboration with FECCIWA, we will encourage churches and their associated communities and schools to explore commitments to water as a human right and a common good, opposition to privatisation, reduced reliance on plastic-packaged water, democratic community management and environmental justice.
These commitments provide a basis for connecting everyday practices with broader demands for safe, affordable and publicly accountable water services.
Strengthening solidarity across West Africa
Our collaboration in Liberia forms part of a wider effort with FECCIWA to support water justice organising in Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia. By linking national platforms with our continental network, we aim to share experiences, strengthen solidarity and support locally rooted campaigns.
The launch will mark the beginning of a continuing process of organising, learning and collective action. We look forward to working with our partners and communities in Liberia to build a strong and inclusive movement for water justice.
